Life is not always clear-cut, straightforward, or easy to understand. Sometimes, our perception plays tricks on our eyes and mind, as things aren’t always what they seem. As an artist, I am interested in discovering things around me that play visual tricks with my eyes as well as creating work that in some way mimics those experiences. A surrealist at heart, I attempt to create mysterious images that cause the viewers to do a double take and to find themselves momentarily in an in-between state of confusion. My work evolves from one series to the next. When I begin a series, I focus in on various ideas or concept and then I create sketches of how I envision those ideas coming to life. For this series, I imagined ways of combining images digitally that employed some of the visual tricks that I’ve seen. I also attempt to show many different dichotomies or opposing groups within my work – conceptual and intuitive, discovered and imagined, eye and mind, outside and inside, nature and man, public and private, real and fictional, as well as the visible and invisible.
